GLORIA GELO
GLORIA GELO Gloria Gelo is an emerging artist living and working in Calgary. Her love of contemporary art combined with a minimalist approach sends the viewer on a journey of a place or time where their imagination lingers, then fills in the blanks. Her abstract work in acrylic, ink and encaustic reflects her love of nature and the organic, yet at times ethereal elements they behold. Her freedom of movement and intuitive approach balance what is seen on the surface and what is concealed below. Her current portfolio explores the beauty of nature, the fluidity of line, the boldness or softness of color and the layered images that emerge through the work. She is continually exploring new ways to express herself and the world around her. Her intent is to make art that makes people smile, reflect and recall moments in their lives that bring them joy.
MAGDA ASSAF
MAGDA ASSAF Although born in Poland, she grew up in Calgary, Alberta and considers it her hometown. From uncreative beginnings (B.Sc. Biochemistry, B.Mgt. Finance, CPA, and a 10 year analytical career), an unexpected spark ignited in late 2015. Suddenly, the urge to connect with her community, the need to create, and the need to be free, set ablaze a series of changes, starting with leaving the corporate world, and entering the unknown. Within months painting became a constant, and creation took a hold of daily life. By mid-2016, Modern Emulsions was born. Magda specializes in the blending effects between acrylics, resin, and metals. The work has fluid-like movement and dries to a glassy finish, making the art have a modern feel. Abstract art resonates with her because it evokes the imagination. It allows the audience to perceive the piece as they need, and enables their minds to wander, to dream. In art, she has found her home. Her right and left brain work in harmony, creating and exploring. And at the root of her happiness, she is able to create pieces that can highlight a room, bring pleasure, and spark passion and imagination in people.
PAUL KOSTABI
PAUL KOSTABI Paul’s work deals with all types of subject matter. He is a visual explorer that is intimately connected to the environment around him. Many of his paintings have the worked-over look of pictures meant to be worlds in themselves. They grab the eye like a stranger grabbing your lapels. They are paintings that love paint: its infinite variability, its stubbornness, its musicality, the energy it emits in contact with itself, the emotions it unlocks, even when it looks as random as spit and drool, as the record of the passing hand.
CARL WHITE
CARL WHITE From Calgary, Canada Carl is a well-established international artist. In the way that a poet would seek to understand language with the goal of approaching the sublime, Carl has tried to understand painting with a similar purpose. The ability to move beyond the literal towards a truth. The tools of a painter are akin to that of a poet, words and their placement, language and its rhythm. He is painting poems, images that dance between realism and abstraction, text and flesh, with the hope that the viewer experiences rather than views.
